It’s Not You Brett, It’s Me.
I had always liked Brett Dennan. His songs are kinda catchy, and I was able to ignore the fact that they’re all about social injustice throughout the world. Not that I don’t care about social injustice. I just like my music a little fluffier, you know? I listen to music to escape the reality of all the crap in the world, not to focus in on it. I feel the same way about actors getting vocal about their political beliefs. I want to be able to watch a movie without distracting myself with the main actor’s screwball political views.
But like I said, I dug Brett’s music and powered though the subject matter. I did this, that is, until one fateful day. I was at work, listening to my ipod, and overheard the line “I curse my whiteness” from his song “There Is So Much More.” Now there’s no going back. I can’t do it anymore.
Brett, I hope you get screwed over by a woman sometime soon and write a bunch of cliché songs about it. But until then, I’m going to listen to something that doesn’t make me feel so crappy about myself.
